Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas and Osorno Volcano

Puerto Montt is a vibrant city located in the Los Lagos Region of Chile at the foothills of the Andes Mountains. It is known as the “Gateway to Patagonia” and is surrounded by stunning landscapes and natural wonders. From the Petrohue Falls in Vincente Perez Rosales National Park to Puerto Varas, there are many attractions to explore. Puerto Varas is a beautiful lakeside town full of charming shops and restaurants. Here there are spectacular views of Llanquihue Lake, while Osorno Volcano looms in the background.

While our ship remained at port in Puerto Montt, we toured some of the surrounding areas. Images start with an area called “The Bubble,” roughly 4,000 feet above sea level. Osorno Volcano continues to rise to 8,700 feet above sea level. Keith Watson, my husband, stands on the deck of the lodge while sipping hot chocolate. The lodge is located at the foot of an area on Osorno where skiers can take a lift to higher slopes. There was no snow at the time of our visit in early March 2023. It was their fall season. The snowman is actually a concrete statue in need of paint.

Next, are the images taken in Vincente Peres Rosales National Park, home to the Petrohue Falls that descend from the slopes of Osorno Volcano. Lush vegetation is abundant in the park. I couldn’t leave without taking a photo of the gorgeous fuchsia that grows profusely in this region to the size of a large bush.

We stopped at a lodge near Puerto Varas for lunch. In the background of the lodge’s beautifully manicured grounds, one would normally have a spectacular view of Osorno Volcano on a clear day. Nonetheless, the dark moody skies helped to make for an interesting photograph.

The remainder of the images were taken in the town of Puerto Varas.
